Tranmere Retaining Wall Enhancement
Enhancing usability and aesthetics with a sophisticated retaining wall in Tranmere, featuring unobstructed water views and innovative drainage solutions.
About This Project
This project was all about overcoming environmental and logistical challenges to deliver a solution that not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. We navigated through unexpected weather delays and technical hurdles with precision and care, ensuring every aspect of the retaining wall was perfect, from its foundational integrity to its aesthetic alignment with the property’s modern design.
Located on the Eastern Shore’s, our client wanted to make better use of their family home front yard – while also keeping to a modern aesthetic. There was a significant volume of earthmoving, drainage design, and land subsidence to remedy. Peter Shepherd personally managed this project from start to finish, ensuring that everything from structural integrity to curb side appearance exceeded the clients expectations.
The Clients Vision
They wanted a glass balustrade so nothing blocked the beautiful water views, a smooth, rendered finish with a fresh coat of paint, and some well-placed lighting to bring it all together. Plus, they asked for a level grassed area and a bit of extra drainage to keep things in check.
Careful Planning & Project Management is Key
Of course, every job has its challenges. For this one, we managed the removal and re-use of 40 tonnes of soil that couldn’t stay on site during the structural foundation phase. The soil was used to fill in and landscape the yard around the new retaining wall before we arrange for new turf to be laid. The late winter rains (common for Tasmania) slowed down the project timeline affecting; concreting, rendering, and painting.
The sub-surface of the yard was definitely the critical aspect of this project; existing telecommunication, sewer, and water lines were a hazard that could have been overlooked by less experienced builders. Fortunately the Raptor Building team are have processes in place to ensure we don’t disrupt / damage critical services. It’s a mistake that can cost significant money for both the homeowner and builder if not managed properly.

Peter ensured the clients were updated at all times, and with a bit of patience we were able to get through the project without compromising on quality, or disrupting any critical services through the excavation and structural foundation stages.
In the end, the new retaining wall turned out exactly how the client wanted it. The glass balustrade keeps their water views clear, the yard is level and green, and the whole space just looks great—especially with the new lighting. The client’s happy, and the front yard is now both functional and fantastic to look at.
